The art of beating genuine gold, practised 5000 years ago, was joined at the end of the 19th century by the beating of other metals — notably brass (imitation gold), aluminium (imitation silver) and copper. Nazionale Battitura Metalli, founded in 1928 by Luigi Masserini, soon established itself in this new technique.
